What are Prebiotics?

To avoid confusion, I want to reprint and condense the Wikipedia definition of prebiotics:

Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients that stimulate the growth or activity of bacteria in the digestive system which are beneficial to the health of the body.[1] They are considered a functional food. Many forms of soluble fiber have a prebiotic affect.

How do Prebiotics Help?

One study on rats demonstrated that they surived 33% longer than a control group that did not get fed prebiotics. Of course, they were fed the nutrient from birth until death. You can see the results here: prebiotics help extend lifespan.

Scientists believe that this natural fiber helps nourish the good bacteria in our colons, and in turn, helps our bodies absorb more nutrients from the food we eat. Particular attention has been paid to middle aged and older people who may be able to absorb more calcium from food with the addition of natural prebiotic supplements.

Learn More About Prebiotics

If you are interested in natural supplements to help improve your health, and possibly, to extend your lifespan, learn more here: Benefits of Prebiotics.

What Causes Hives?

My family has had a a couple of memorable attacks of hives, and they always seem to happen at the wrong time. During my wedding, my mother broke out in a terrible rash. Except for eating some different food than she was used to, and of course being excited and happy, my mom could not imagine what she did to bring on this uncomfortable outbreak.

My son endured his one and only outbreak when were on a family vacation. Now he had run around outside, and it is possible he had contact with some plants that caused the eruption. But, even after we visited the doctor, we could not figure out what brought it on. The doctor prescribed an anti-hystamine which did not seem to help at all. The outbreak was awful, with red and itchy bumps everywhere on his body, even the palms of his hands and on his ears!

So what causes hives? They are thought to be a hystamine related reaction (allergy), and many people associate them with an excited mental state. In both cases in our family, the people who had a hives attack were excited, but in a happy way. They were happy, that is, until hives ruined their fun.

Are Hives Ruining Your Fun?

Doctors tend to prescribe allergy medication, but my family members never enjoyed much relief. Topical ointments to help with the itching did more. Beyond that, allergy medications tended to make them sleepy or dizzy, and they felt like the cure was almost worse than the disease!

Homeopathic (naural) hives remedies seem to offer more relief to my crew. They combine natural and homeopathic ingredients which are non-toxic and without the side effects that “drug store” medications seem to have. The formula addresses the symptoms of an itchy or burning rash, inflamation, and sensitivity.

Natural Hives Treatment

Are You a Candidate For Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Are you a candidate for irritable bowel syndrome? Do you have abdominal pain or cramping? Do you have constipation? Diarrhea? How about vomiting, or fever or headache? How about bloating and water retention? Irritable bowel syndrome is not pleasant for anyone who has it, and many many Americans do suffer from it, in fact more every year. Many of these turn to Bowtrol Colon Cleanser for relief.

Natural Relief for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

Why do they turn to Bowtrol Colon Cleanser? The answer to that is easy. Bowtrol Colon Cleanser is all natural and has many successful users. Their track record is outstanding. Bowtrol Colon Cleanser in league with a healthy lifestyle that should include moderate exercise and sensible eating habits can help keep the colon cleansed. Two to three good, regular and healthy bowel movements a day are essential to good colon health. Bowtrol Colon Cleanser helps with this. So does good eating. Most Americans eat way too much fast food. Too much sugar, too much fat. Not enough vegetables and fruit. Not enough healthy grains or legumes. Legumes are beans of all types – green beans, black beans, lima beans, butter beans, brown beans, navy beans, pinto beans, and on and on. Also peanuts are legumes. These are great sources of fiber for better colon cleanliness and better colon health. A one-two punch of better eating habits and Bowtrol Colon Cleanser can make a world of difference in most people. Good colon health and cleanliness can be the difference between a pain free day and a day full of abdominal cramping. It can also be the difference between feeling good and feeling constipated, or bloated or headachy. And remember that good colon health means no diarrhea, an experience few people enjoy.

The reason for good colon health and cleanliness leading to health elsewhere in the body is simple really. The colon is a very large and very complex organ. It contains more nerves than any other organ, except of course for the brain and the spinal column, known as the central nervous system. All other organs in the body are connected to the colon, and all organs in the body work together. If the colon has problems, these problems spread to other organs and you will feel symptoms of spastic colon, irritable bowel syndrome or another ailment. It only makes good health sense to do what you can to keep your colon cleansed and healthy to keep the rest of your body functioning properly. Bowtrol Colon Cleanser is a great place to start.

So How Does Sleep Make You Thinner?

No matter what diet we try, or do not try, we all link weight gain to the amount and type of food we eat. However, new research shows that many people are gaining weight because they do not get enough sleep! It is hard, at first to understand why sleep helps people stay slimmer.

Here are three reasons why you should get enough sleep in order to regulate your weight:

If you are staying up late, you may be doing some extra snacking. It is hard to imagine staying up late to finish some work, or even watch a movie, without stuffing extra food in my mouth.

The second reason is not as obvious as extra snacks. This involves what’s going on biochemically when you’re sleep deprived. Hormones that affect appetite take over, making you hungrier the next morning. These hormones also make you feel not as full after eating

A lack of sleep can make some people suffer more anxiety too. Anxiety can lead to eating disorders, and some scientists tell us that stress hormones tell our bodies to store more fat.

If you have been packing away some extra pounds, and you cannot explain it by a change in your diet, see if a change in your sleep pattern helps you.

Make Some Sweet Treats With Kids!

Everybody loves frozen sweet treats, but many of them are loaded with calories. We have some ideas for sweet frozen treats that are simple enough for kids to make, and also will help your kids contribute to a healthy diet.

Make Your Own Frozen Yogurt Pops!

Simple buy your favorite flavor of regular yogurt, some small paper cups, and some popsicle sticks. Spoon the yogurt into the paper cup, and then cover the cup with pastic wrap. Insert a stick into each cup. You will need to break a small hole in the plastic wrap. Stick these treats in your freezer, wait a couple of hours, and then enjoy them when you need some frozen yummies!

Frozen Bananas

Frozen bananas are great. There is some sort of synergy here between the banana and the freezing that makes it almost taste like banana ice cream. Peel a couple of bananas, put them on a plate, and freeze them over night. Enjoy! If you do not think you will eat them right away, you may want to stick the bananas in a freezer bag or cover them with plastic wrap. After the bananas are frozen, you can also dip them in yogurt or syrup. We like to take a little chocoate syrup, mix it with chopped nuts, and use that as a dip!

Freeze Pops

Just about any drink can make a popsicle. Of course, you can buy them already made, but kids seem to enjoy the satisfaction of making them at home. You can also buy a plastic mold for them, but small paper cups and popsicle sticks work well too. Try sugar free drink mix, sodas, or anything you think of.

Why Bother To Make Healthy Treats

We find that kids are more likely to enjoy health food that they had a hand in preparing. Besides, it is probably more economical to prepare you own treats than it is to buy them. You will also help your kids learn their way around the kitchen by starting with some simple foods that they enjoy.

I guess we really are what we eat! I guess we know that some foods tend to make us feel better. Lots of people refer to food like meatloaf and ice cream as comfort foods. But just what food can affect our mood?

Are you feeling anxious or upset because you are dehydrated? Anxiety can actually be a symptom of dehydration. Do not wait until you feel thirsty to have a drink of water.

If your head feels fuzzy, and you find it hard to concentrate, make sure you are eating enough protein. We tend to turn to starchy foods for snacks when we feel sluggish, but a hard boiled egg, slice of cheese, or bowl of tuna may serve you better.

You already knew that chocolate makes you feel better. Experts agree that chocolate can be a great mood elevator, and besides, it tastes great! If you are worried about eating too much, try buying the snack size. Here’s another guiltless chocolate idea I found at my local grocery store – Chocolate Yerba Tea! It only has 4 calories, 0 carbs, and just a surprising hint of cocoa.

Do you have any favorite mood foods?

We have more suggestions for natural remedies!
