When you reach your 40s and 50s, your bodies are getting ready for the next phase, which can be viewed poorly (menopause), but really it can be an insightful and helpful experience.Yes, you need to be more careful in paying attention to osteoporosis and certain diseases that you were susceptible in your 20s and 30s, your risk for these diseases and more increases in your 40s and into your 50s. The average age of menopause is 51 but most women can reach it between the ages of 45 and 55. Before you reach menopause, you can experience changes for a full decade before your menstrual cycle stops, called “perimenopause” or the “menopause transition.” Changes include one or more missed menstrual periods, hot flashes, irritability, problems sleeping and a decreased sex drive.

Your metabolism continues to slow during this time so not only can exercise help you from gaining weight but it can also help strengthen your bones. Since your estrogen levels are also decreasing, you’re at increased risk for bone loss, which can lead to osteoporosis. Your skin is also changing and showing signs of aging such as changes in skin color or pigmentation, moles, and wrinkles. Make sure to visit a dermatologist if you notice any unusual skin changes.

Some preventative health screenings you need include:

Pap test for cervical cancer

Clinical breast exams

Yearly Mammogram

Diabetes blood glucose test

Blood pressure test for hypertension

Cholesterol

Bone density baseline

Stool screening

Thyroid test

Complete eye exam

Having health insurance can keep costs down when getting the preventative health screenings you need. Women in their mid 40s and older are more likely than men to lack health insurance. A study by the Older Women’s League shows that only 55% of women between the ages of 45 and 64 (before qualifying for Medicare) have health insurance. Not only do more men have health insurance, their premiums are lower as well. Though women are more likely to go to the doctor than men thus the increased premiums rates, staying healthy and getting your preventative health screenings can help you both physically and financially in the long run.

Health Insurance in your 20s and 30s

In young adulthood (ages 20-39), health issues now tend to reflect a women’s marital and career issues. At this stage in a women’s life, they are most susceptible to immune system disorders such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis; and they also may be at risk for diabetes and other chronic conditions. Additional health concerns for women may include weight gain, ovarian cancer, skin cancer, and breast cancer.

Young adulthood may be the time to make sure your chosen lifestyle did not lead to any illnesses or disease. When a woman is in her 20s, she should try to avoid skin-damaging habits such as smoking, drinking, and a lot of sun exposure. Always make sure to use sunscreen, even in the winter. Women in their 20s are also more fertile and more likely to give birth.

As women move into their 30s, estrogen and progesterone levels fall and they become less and less fertile, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get pregnant. Since metabolism begins to slow down as well in your 30s, you should make sure to have an exercise routine to keep from gaining weight. A significant health concern for women in their 30s is the development of osteoporosis. Women’s bones begin to lose calcium, and 1 in 4 women will develop osteoporosis in her lifetime. Making sure you are taking at least 1500 mg. of calcium a day can help you to avoid this.

Some tests women in their 20s and 30s should take may include:

Yearly breast exams

Pelvic exams

Mammogram (usually between the ages of 30 and 35)

Pap smear

Breast self-exam

Annual physical

Blood pressure

Cholesterol

Since many tests are recommended to keep you healthy into your mature and post menopause years, it is best both for your health and financial status to have health insurance. A study has shown that health insurance rates are lowest among 23 and 24 year olds and increase in the 31 and 32 year old group. It is also proven that women tend to pay more for health insurance, especially in their 30s. Women tend to use medical facilities and resources more often than men. This causes insurance companies to increase premiums for women at a rate as much as 49% more. Staying healthy, exercising, eating right, and taking the necessary precautions to a healthy future can help to lower insurance rates.

Women Tend To Provide Elder Care and Use Medicare Health Benefits More

Well, Medicare health insurance is not just a woman’s issue, but many women are affected by their choices in a couple of ways.

Women live longer, and can expect to use Medicare health benefits longer than men.

Women tend to be caregivers for older family members. If a parent requires elder care, women tend to step and take primary responsibility.

Finding The Best Medicare Health Plan

These days, seniors have more health insurance choices than ever before. But all of these choices can seem very complex if you are trying to look for the very best Medicare health plan for yourself, or for a Medicare beneficiary that you care about.

You need to understand the basics of original Medicare (Part A and Part B). Then you need to decide if a Medicare supplement, Medicare Advantage Plan, Medicare Prescription Plan (or some combination of these) will work out the best for you.

Available Medicare Health Insurance Plans

Medicare supplements are also called medi-gap plans, and they cover the “gaps” in coverage of original Medicare like deductibles, copays, and limits to coverage. Medicare prescription plans are designed to help seniors pay for their prescription drugs. Medicare Advantage plans bundle up the coverage from original Medicare with additional coverage, and they are different than Medicare supplements. Some MA plans may include prescription coverage, and sometimes a prescription plan needs to be purchased on its own.

This is hardly a complete description of available plans, and your own coverage will vary by where you live, your specific health needs, and your budget. Insurers offer plans by states, counties, and zip codes. Some plans will require a large additional premium, and some do not. Some plans are specificaly designed to cover people with specific chronic health conditions, while others are developed for a general population of senior citizens.

Is Health Insurance Different For Women?

Tha Kaiser Family Foundation conducted an extensive health care study in 2005, and this led to their report that confirms health care is not gender neutral. While health care is important to both women and men, women do have more complex health care needs. Women get pregnant, and need ongoing reproductive system care. In addition, women appear to be at a much greater risk for maladies such as osteoporosis and autoimmune diseases like lupus, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis—all of which require ongoing treatment.

But all of those health related statistics aside, also consider that women tend to make the health care decisions for their children. Women also live longer, on average, and that means they consumer more health care resources.

Are Women Insured

The latest statistics report that 17 million women do not have health insurance in the US, and 1 out of 10 working women do not get a group medical plan at work. The news has been strangely silent on this issue lately, but the current economic recess, and ongoing massive layoffs, has got to make this situation worse.

So yes, women are affected by health insurance problems, and I would also have to predict that women will be hit harder during this economic recession because of a loss of income and group health benefits.

Is Somebody Helping Women With Health Care Needs?

If you have a health care concerns, you may want to visit The Society for Women’s Health Research. They fund research on female health, and also advocate for women’s health.

If you need health care, but are not covered, visit here: No Health Insurance.

Of course, we are still waiting for the promised health care reforms to be promoted by the current administration. We know that the US has plenty of problems to deal with, but when it comes to our health, we do not forget!
