Women Tend To Provide Elder Care and Use Medicare Health Benefits More

Well, Medicare health insurance is not just a woman’s issue, but many women are affected by their choices in a couple of ways.

Women live longer, and can expect to use Medicare health benefits longer than men.

Women tend to be caregivers for older family members. If a parent requires elder care, women tend to step and take primary responsibility.

Finding The Best Medicare Health Plan

These days, seniors have more health insurance choices than ever before. But all of these choices can seem very complex if you are trying to look for the very best Medicare health plan for yourself, or for a Medicare beneficiary that you care about.

You need to understand the basics of original Medicare (Part A and Part B). Then you need to decide if a Medicare supplement, Medicare Advantage Plan, Medicare Prescription Plan (or some combination of these) will work out the best for you.

Available Medicare Health Insurance Plans

Medicare supplements are also called medi-gap plans, and they cover the “gaps” in coverage of original Medicare like deductibles, copays, and limits to coverage. Medicare prescription plans are designed to help seniors pay for their prescription drugs. Medicare Advantage plans bundle up the coverage from original Medicare with additional coverage, and they are different than Medicare supplements. Some MA plans may include prescription coverage, and sometimes a prescription plan needs to be purchased on its own.

This is hardly a complete description of available plans, and your own coverage will vary by where you live, your specific health needs, and your budget. Insurers offer plans by states, counties, and zip codes. Some plans will require a large additional premium, and some do not. Some plans are specificaly designed to cover people with specific chronic health conditions, while others are developed for a general population of senior citizens.

Elder care refers to any special resources for elderly people in frail health. This population is, actually, only estimated at about 5% of the over 65 population. But their needs can be very intense, and caregivers do not always know where to find it.

Frailty is defined as chronic functional impairment in one or more of 6 activities of daily living (ADL’s) requiring the help of another person. These ADL’s include:

Bathing

Dressing

Grooming

Transferring

Eating

Toileting

What Kind of Elder Care Is Available?

Here are some examples of elder care resources that are available to help caregivers.

Meals (in-home or in congregate settings)

Socialization

Personal care

Light housekeeping in the home

Residential facilities (retirement homes, Board and Care facilities, and nursing facilities)

Adult day care

Transportation

Telephone reassurance

Friendly visiting

Caregiver support

Respite care

Emergency response systems such as Lifeline

You may find some community based programs. Other programs are provided by private companies, and of course, may come with a high price tag. If you need help caring for a senior that you love, you can find help from the government.
