Youngsters who’re in the intermediate reading stage are progressing as readers. They normally can read simple books and stories – those that don’t have too many exhausting words and that aren’t too long. Although they probably know many of the widespread sight words and might sound out most words, many kids should not but independent readers. That is, they don’t seem to be able to strike out on their very own with tough or prolonged reading materials. But they are on their means! That’s the purpose – to assist them acquire the abilities and love of reading that may enable them to be independent readers.

Research show that individuals who read just a little sooner bear in mind more and enjoy reading more. Many parents worry that they aren’t skilled to show their youngster tips on how to read. The good news is that they don’t need to be. The most important challenge is to create a desire to read. Youngsters at this age are moving toward independence. Proceed to assist them find materials they love to read. It’s necessary to get youngsters to read – and read lots! That is what will build each curiosity and skills. It’s a circular factor: The more they read, the more they prefer to read. The more they like to read, the more they read, understand, apply, and enjoy life. Reading is a talent like any other. It takes practice to be good at it. Because success in reading goes to the children who read the most, a father or mother’s challenge is to encourage their child to read many books. Listed below are some strategies:

(1) Discover books that your youngster will love to read — even when it might take some doing. You might begin by finding out something about your little one’s interests. If a baby loves to attract, there are

many books about artists or youngsters who draw. There are millions of books available to appeal to each curiosity and reading level. Kids think they are actually beginning to read once they get into chapter books. Librarians are fantastic resources for guide ideas. One local librarian/school trainer gave this recommendation for eight yr olds:

Most boys like the Dean Hughes books. They’re short and exciting. They transfer right along. And for ladies The

American Lady Series are popular. Some girls take a look at 4 and 5 at a time. These are the stories primarily based on the historic dolls that the girls all want. One factor that’s nice is that there’s a little bit little bit of history combined in. Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys are still standard with these age groups.

Librarians often are a walking fountain of information about books and in addition to what’s in their heads, they’ll provide e-book lists, or put you onto some adult books that recommend reading materials for kids of assorted ages and abilities.

(2) One other factor dad and mom can do is present frequent alternatives to read. With a purpose to read well, a teen has to read a lot. Faculties sometimes enable not sufficient time per day for reading so assist from home is essential. Youngsters want at least quarter-hour of reading time – every day. Thirty minutes is better. Parents have to be firm in scheduling time every day for reading. To add selection,

older youngsters can read to younger ones occasionally. And don’t overlook to make time when the family can read together. Children can take their flip reading. Make reading a privilege. Consider small rewards.

MOM:

You can stay up 15 minutes later tonight if you want to read in bed a while.

DAD:

Since you cleared the table, I’ll do the dishes and you may read for as long as it takes me.

(3) Another method to make reading pleasurable is to read together. Reading to youngsters provides them the chance to listen to literature that is more superior than they will read. The publicity to more complicated material stimulates growth within the areas of important thinking and vocabulary. It encourages youngsters to enhance their reading expertise so that they will access extra complicated books independently.

Also, give your teen an opportunity to read to you. Make this a very relaxed experience. Be very positive. Maintain again on the criticism. Shared reading – I’ll have a turn after which you have got a turn – is a enjoyable option to give your little one follow reading aloud. Present interest in what your youngster is reading. Have little talks in regards to the books each of you’re reading.

MOTHER:

So what are you reading as of late?

CHILD:

“Weasel.”

MOM:

Is it any good?

CHILD:

Oh, it’s awesome!

MOM:

So what’s so good about it?

CHILD:

It’s simply really exciting. It’s about this little one, see? And his

dad turns up missing. And he’s been harm and left for dead

by this terrible Indian hunter known as Weasel. So this child and

his sister need to go out and discover him and . . . . [FADE]

You might have to be ready for some countless book reviews, however it’s price it. It really helps to narrate a book a teen is reading to real life. You could read about one thing and then go to a museum. Or speak to somebody who is an skilled in a subject your child is interested in. This method is especially helpful with reluctant readers. Some youngsters read method below degree and want particular assist with skills or comprehension. There are some things dad and mom can strive, so long as reading is just not made into drudgery. If your baby is a slow reader as a result of she or he nonetheless factors to individual words, encourage the use of a card to train the eye to look at chunks of words; then start sliding the cardboard down the page.

(4) To encourage fluency, you may try timing a paragraph, after which having the kid attempt to beat the velocity for a small sticker or prize. This has to really feel like a fun game, though. If it makes your little one tense, don’t do it. If comprehension is the issue, asking a couple of questions will help a teenager look for meaning. Typically youngsters can read all of the words, however don’t have a clue what they mean.

CHILD [READING]:

“Are available in!” cried the King, with a boom, boom, boom.

Right this moment we battle in the tub!”

DAD:

So what are they going to do within the tub?

CHILD [BLANK LOOK]:

Huh?

DAD:

The king says, “Immediately we battle in the tub.”

You recognize what a battle is?

CHILD:

Oh. A battle! That means they’ll fight.

[HE PROCESSES THAT IDEA] In the bathtub?

CHILD:

“Help ! Help! cried the Page when the sun bought hot.

King Bid, uh, B.”

DAD:

You can break that word down into two parts and sound it out.

The first part is…

CHILD:

B-uh Bid.

DAD:

Now the last part. It starts with a ‘g.’ You understand this word.

CHILD:

Good. King.

DAD:

Absolutely appropriate!

If kids are reading far below level, and these options don’t help them make progress, get additional help from any local a Family Literacy Center in your area.

.

Some mother and father might imagine that infants and preschoolers are too young to learn. Throughout this early period, they experience more brain development than at every other time of their lives. If parents wait till a toddler is of faculty age to begin, very important studying years may be lost. Kids learn essential issues during this time of their life, however the learning takes place in a very different way than it does for adults. Adults can study via logical intellectual processes. Youngsters learn through experience with their senses. When parents present an environment where youngsters have experiences that develop these senses, studying takes place. Thirty years of research have shown that a father or mother is a child’s first and most necessary teacher. One essential research concluded that the casual training a household gives for younger children could make extra of an affect on a child’s total education than the colleges can! If the household does its job properly, then public colleges can succeed.

The Family Literacy Center philosophy is that the colleges ought to turn out to be a support to the parent’ duty to assist their children discover ways to read. Even parents with little education can train their children. They will do it even if they are limited in their very own potential to talk and read English.

Three issues are most necessary for mind development and learning through the first five years: First is love and emotional support. Kids learn positive values with heat and affection. That means holding a child. Speaking and singing to them. And reading stories to them – even when they’re too young to understand. Second is a stimulating environment, with many things that youngsters can see, feel, handle, hear and taste.

Youngsters need to maneuver via their surroundings and expertise the world by their younger bodies. Third is a lot of positive interaction with a parent or other loving adult caregiver. Positive interaction means being with a child as you do one thing pleasant together, speaking about it and listening to the child. It means getting down on the floor and playing. From this perspective, single and dealing dad and mom have a tremendous challenge. In case you are one in every of these, you will need to make a particular effort to offer your child the highest priority. The first three years, especially, when the most important learning takes place, pass very quickly and can’t be recalled.

A loving and expert caregiver can tremendously improve the care offered within the home. If a baby is placed in a day care middle or with a nanny, look for someone who can provide the setting we’ve described. Caregivers should be very heat and loving. However remember, some caregivers with many children, can not give the one-onone quality time that parents or other family members can give. Caregivers ought to play with the youngsters, learn to them, and talk to them. The caregiver heart, besides being safe and clean, ought to present fascinating toys and actions that allow a toddler to explore and contact and move.

How does television fit into this? Most experts in childhood development consider that kids of all ages watch an excessive amount of TV. Some high quality applications like Sesame Road and Mr. Rogers Neighborhood may also help a baby learn and grow. But an excessive amount of TV deprives kids of essential experiences and robs them of creativity. Violence on TV has been proven to trigger poor attention expertise and the potential to concentrate. Besides in times of emergency, the TV set shouldn’t serve as the child sitter.

Love, a stimulating environment, and optimistic interaction assist a child be taught and finally grow to be a great reader. The presentations available in native Family Literacy Centers present examples and ideas to help mother and father do these essential things. Analysis shows that a very powerful thing mother and father can do is learn stories to their youngster from the time they’re infants. As a result of this skill doesn’t come naturally to many parents, and because the methods are different at numerous ages, we’ve got a number of demonstrations on this necessary subject. The opposite articles in this series are designed to assist dad and mom benefit from the most recent research and advisable follow that permits them to turn into better at serving to their youngsters read and learn.

Experiences that lead to skills in reading start as soon as a baby is born. These experiences have little to do with recognizing phrases or letters of the alphabet – activities we often associate with learning. As was mentioned in Part 1 of this sequence, there are three keys mother and father can use to open the door to studying – (1) offering love and emotional support, (2) providing an atmosphere that’s stimulating to the senses, and (3) providing interaction with loving mother and father or caregivers. Recent analysis on the brain shows most brain improvement takes place within the first three years of life. So schooling shouldn’t wait till kindergarten. Early experiences affect the mind for a lifetime. Actually, CAT scans show that the shortage of sure experiences can retard development in the brain – making some areas smaller and decreasing connections between neurons. Encouraging research is coming from The National Institute of Little one Well being and Human Growth (NICHD) showing how numerous actions of the brain can really be strengthened with pc exercises to help a toddler study to read. There is overwhelming scientific proof that when loving dad and mom spend high quality time with an toddler or toddler, that later there is a discount in crime, teen pregnancies, and the need for special education. A child’s self esteem and learning are enhanced and the right sorts of experiences even promote morality and sense of self. A very powerful factor is to indicate love. In order for the mind to develop properly, a baby must really feel safe and secure. Love can actually affect the chemistry of the brain. Love is proven by holding and touching. It may be proven with facial expressions and eye contact. Verbal expressions are important too. Both what we are saying and how we are saying it communicate affection. Babies and young children study an unimaginable quantitythrough the use of their senses to discover their environment. Don’t fear about offering uncommon or costly things. Just capitalize on what’s available. For example, a toddler loves to listen to a mother or father’s voice. So talk lots to the kid, even before they understand what’s being said. That’s how language improvement starts. One other technique to stimulate the mind is to let the child explore the world. Infants and young children study by way of their senses. They should taste, feel, hear, odor, and use their bodies.

It’s vital that oldsters interact with youngsters – play with them and talk to them. One good exercise is “flooring time” with the child. That’s, get down on the kid’s degree and play. Pretend games stimulate the kid’s imagination. Some kinds of play train downside solving and logic. Apart from talking to the kid, present other language experiences. Most younger kids love to take heed to songs, finger performs, and nursery rhymes. When children get just a little older, like two or three, have interaction in conversations. Ask the kid questions. Ask for opinions. When youngsters hear numerous talk, they grow to be acquainted with phrases, a good preparation for both language growth and reading.

One of the vital necessary things that can be achieved to organize a toddler for reading is to begin early with books. Infants can hold and handle books and have a look at the pictures. They turn pages and deal with books carefully. Contemplate sturdy fabric books or board books – books made from heavy cardboard that won’t tear. Kids love to listen to simple repetitive tales and speak in regards to the footage again and again many times until they inform the stories their way. By the time a child is two or three, read stories for a couple of minutes every day. Make story time a pleasing experience. Cuddle as much as your little one and luxuriate in yourself. This tells a toddler that reading is fun and prepares them to love books when they are older. Studying aloud teaches children many vital ideas wanted before they will read. Think about teaching the next simple things: maintain a book proper side up, start on the front of the e book, use pictures to inform a story, clarify that printed symbols represent phrases, and the phrases go from left to right.

Pre-faculty kids need to have many books available. This isn’t arduous to do. Many picture books are very inexpensive. The library is an excellent supply for image books. A two-yr old is not too younger to get pleasure from picking out books at a library. Since it’s important to read tales to young children, what follows is a quick instance of how this could be done. Infants like books, regardless that they don’t understand the story. They enjoy the cuddling, listening to the father or mother’s voice, handling the guide, and seeing the pictures. Older youngsters like the same issues, but are studying to additionally benefit from the story and interpret the pictures. Both infants and young youngsters study some important issues about how books work – reminiscent of which end is up, which is the front and which is the back, that the printed words stand for spoken phrases, and that the photographs assist inform a story.

Here are some issues to think about when choosing books to read to a child: (1) A e-book for a baby should be sturdy. (2) Think about a board ebook or one made of cloth. (3) Paper books are advantageous in case you don’t mind them being torn up. It’s all the time necessary to speak a few book. The kid will not be able to follow most tales, however you may speak about what’s taking place within the pictures.

DAD: Look I’ve got a guide a couple of duck. Are you able to say duck?

DAD: There’s a duck right there. A duck says “quack.” Can you say “quack”? Can you see one other duck? [CHILD POINTS] I believe that’s a tree. Look some more. Sure, that’s a duck. Good job! Sure, you’ll be able to read. Right here, turn the page and let’s see what’s next. [baby turns page] The duck is in the water. He’s swimming. Are we all finished? Okay. We’ll learn one other time.

And even at a really younger age, children can start prewriting experiences. Learning to write helps children learn higher too. “Fake” writing is a very important step to real writing. As soon as kids can handle a crayon or piece of chalk, allow them to scribble. Participate in this exercise with your child. They will be taught extra, and besides, they need to be protected from sharp pencils or the temptation to eat crayons or write on walls. An older child can begin forming crude letters. It takes effort and time to raise a child. Many parents learn ideas of parenting and then observe them. The ideas given in this article will go a great distance toward helping children develop their brains.

(1888PressRelease)Women’s Networking Alliance Hosts Fundraiser for Bay Area Child in Need of Double Transplant. 49ers Safety Michael Lewis and other local celebrities support the cause

San Jose, CA – The Women’s Networking Alliance, a Silicon Valley community of women business owners, announced they are hosting “Everyday Superheroes,” a fundraiser on June 6, 2010 at the Santa Clara Convention Center from 4:00 – 9:00 p.m. to help raise money for five-year-old Brentwood resident Aaron Tanner who is suffering from kidney and heart failure. 49ers safety Michael Lewis, who suffers from a heart ailment himself called atrial fibrillation, among others will attend the benefit to help raise awareness and funds for Aaron.

Aaron had his first of three open heart surgeries when he was just over a week old. At a time when most parents are celebrating the arrival of their new baby, Aaron’s parents were faced with the overwhelming tragedy of their older son, four-year-old, Ethan dying only a few weeks later from an undiagnosed heart condition, unrelated to Aaron’s. If that’s not enough of a challenge, The Tanner’s tapped medical insurance as hit the ceiling.

Local president of the Women’s Networking Alliance (WNA) and small business entrepreneur, Debbie Quintana, heard of Aaron’s story and decided to pull together the “Everyday Superheroes” event which will include an auction, dinner and dancing. WNA has set up a website (www.wnacommunity.com) for donations and sponsors to help support the cause in addition to attending the benefit.

Along with 49ers safety Michael Lewis, the event will feature local firefighters dressed in superhero costumes and the San Jose Police Department will attend. The 49ers are also donating a VIP Training Camp Experience for four in Santa Clara. Additional support has generously come in from the Oakland Raiders, San Jose Sharks, the Silvercreek Sportsplex, Best Buy and Comcast is their executive sponsor.

The event will feature comedian, actor, keynote speaker and author, Mark Lundholm as well as a local 16 year girl comedian, Sarah Kay. Additional talent donations have come from local bands, Above the Law and The Magnolia Jazz Trio.

“Even people from out of state have shown their support including owner of Organized Management, Al Dias, actor and entrepreneur, most recently co-starring as Big Lou in “The Good Guys” on FOX. This is absolutely amazing and I’m confident we’ll sell out.” said Quintana. “We still need help so my ask is to spread the word.” When Quintana was asked about her reason for driving support for Aaron, her response was personal, “Like Michael Lewis, I suffer from atrial fibrillation and heart disease runs in my family. Aaron has a long life ahead of him and this is just simply the right thing to do.”

The generosity of the community has been overwhelming to Aaron’s mom Elizabeth, “What Debbie and her organization have done for us brings me to tears. She truly is a super woman. I hope that once Aaron is well that I can give back and raise awareness about donor ship.”

Tickets to the event are $75 or a table of 10 is $650 and are available at www.wnacommunity.com or by calling (408) 448-6131. Donations, auction item donations or other correspondence can be sent to: The Aaron Tanner Foundation, c/o The Women’s Networking Alliance, 4960 Almaden Expressway #293, San Jose, CA 95118. Donations are tax deductible.

I am a vey fast keyboarder, and I love to chat on a phone. So, of course, my kids prefer to communicate with me in a way that makes me crazy. They text me. Why do they text me?

Well, for one thing, they are good at using text messaging, and I am not. They also do not have to speak with me, but can just communicate quickly. Maybe they do not want their peers to realize they are communicating with their parents for whatever reason that kids have for things like this. Also, for them, texting is cool – a technology of their generation, and not of mine.

If your kids are texting you, here are some tips for staying in the loop:

Learn some shortcuts. For instance, you can key in “TL” for Talk Later, or “L8″ for late. When texting, substitutions like “U” for You, will pass as good grammar!

Does your phone have a “predictive” texting feature? If you have this setting turned on, the software will complete common words for you, and it can save a lot of time.

You can save templates with common messages. If you are always trying to send a message that asks your kids where they are, when they will be home, or what they want for dinner, save it in a template!

Take a few minutes to look over the manual that came with your phone. It should teach you how to use your keypad to produce letters and common punctuation.

A text message is not a college level essay. Don’t sweat proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Just get to the point!

My kid’s friends are actually suprised that I can text, though I would be the first to say that most tenth graders are much better at it than I am. If you really cannot use a phone keypad to text, consider buying one of those new phones that come with a real QWERTY (typewriter) keypad. That should speed you up!

Everybody loves frozen sweet treats, but many of them are loaded with calories. We have some ideas for sweet frozen treats that are simple enough for kids to make, and also will help your kids contribute to a healthy diet.

Make Your Own Frozen Yogurt Pops!

Simple buy your favorite flavor of regular yogurt, some small paper cups, and some popsicle sticks. Spoon the yogurt into the paper cup, and then cover the cup with pastic wrap. Insert a stick into each cup. You will need to break a small hole in the plastic wrap. Stick these treats in your freezer, wait a couple of hours, and then enjoy them when you need some frozen yummies!

Frozen Bananas

Frozen bananas are great. There is some sort of synergy here between the banana and the freezing that makes it almost taste like banana ice cream. Peel a couple of bananas, put them on a plate, and freeze them over night. Enjoy! If you do not think you will eat them right away, you may want to stick the bananas in a freezer bag or cover them with plastic wrap. After the bananas are frozen, you can also dip them in yogurt or syrup. We like to take a little chocoate syrup, mix it with chopped nuts, and use that as a dip!

Freeze Pops

Just about any drink can make a popsicle. Of course, you can buy them already made, but kids seem to enjoy the satisfaction of making them at home. You can also buy a plastic mold for them, but small paper cups and popsicle sticks work well too. Try sugar free drink mix, sodas, or anything you think of.

Why Bother To Make Healthy Treats

We find that kids are more likely to enjoy health food that they had a hand in preparing. Besides, it is probably more economical to prepare you own treats than it is to buy them. You will also help your kids learn their way around the kitchen by starting with some simple foods that they enjoy.
