ARAS: Animal Rescue and Adoption Society: a way to care, share and get something back!
In these trying times, it seems like everyone needs help and a handout. Volunteer and green are in. It’s like the 70’s without all the love, which is kind of sad.
This weekend I happened to be lucky enough to do “volunteer” work for a no-kill cat shelter. This place has been around for years and looked somewhat improved from the 5 year hiatus I took. (I know, that’s a long time). Basically, what they consider “volunteer” work and the reason I’m putting parenthases around the word volunteer is because you can go in on any weekend afternoon and pet cats.
That’s not what I would normally call volunteer work! Honestly, sitting down and petting animals starving for attention that want to give you love back is NOT what I’d consider giving of myself! I get so much back in return! These little kitties who have been either rejected, thrown to the streets, or just plain abused are right at your feet asking you to love them. How could you not (unless you were allergic or hated cats)?
This shelter is completely non profit and you have the opportunity to even adopt a cat. They have bake offs and cleanup and accept donations and have fairs to support their little team of people who take care of the cats purely through their love for them and their own volunteering. These people make little to no money to care for something other humans couldn’t care for, regardless of the situation. Sweet little things purring around your ankles, trying to vie for your attention, and crawl right into your arms.
I say, if you are in need of feeling loved and need to feel good about yourself and others, I can’t think of a better way to spend a few hours on your time off to get and give things we all need, whether we are human or animal. Check out Obama’s link to the volunteer work, or call your local humane society to find out more about “volunteering”.
Spread the word!
