Resume Revamp

If you are like me, letting your resume you created 10 years ago get old, outdated and dusty, this article is to encourage those of you who need to get over the hump (I’m currently sitting on).

Here might be a few things to help you get started:

Have a drink to calm youself down and ask someone who is your biggest mentor who wants you to succeed, who will provide you with honest truth critique your resume.

As you are listening and taking notes, it might be good to just do a shot.  Because if you had my resume, it was like taking a punch in the gut when I started listening to the person SHRED me .  I knew he had my best interest, but for some reason, your resume is kind of YOU on paper, and although I appreciate the truth, it is really hard to take that your 20+ years of experience is minimized to title, name of company and years employed.

But!  That’s what is needed.  That is also why I recommend you be in a very calm mood when starting this process.

NOW! Once they have shredded it, go find an online resume template.  Make sure you have at least two resume templates: one for normal and one for online submissions.  The online one should be easy to convert into things like notepad, is easily compatible and transferrable and can be read easily by HR managers or anyone interviewing for the position.

Then, you will need to fit your sliced and diced resume into the format.  This is not as easy as it sounds, because if your old resume was OLD, you have much changing to do.  Try not to condense too much or have too many bullet points.

Once you have it in its rough format, and you see any repetition, clean that up or put sentences together.  Then, find the person that is great at editing or copywriting and have them proof and polish your resume.

This sounds like a lot of proofing, but you need it.  Once that is done, your resume is in its next to last stage.  What you want then is to have someone in your industry read it and make sure they understand it and don’t have any questions.  If that’s done, you are done!  If not, write and re write….

Happy resumeing!
