Obtaining health insurance for a woman at age 40: WARNING!!

March 18, 2009 | Author: April | Posted in Insurance

I have not yet hit the age of 40, but it’s quickly approaching me.  I had to renew my policy, and I decided to go shopping at this site: Health Plan One and filled out some preliminary information and got to see health insurance carrier plans as well as their online quotes!  (NOTE: those quotes are preliminary and definitely it’s good to speak with an agent to help refine what you need and can afford, because pricing is subject to underwriting).

As I did see I had several options to continue:

1.       Apply online or mail in application

2.       Do online chat

3.       Speak with an agent (my preferred method)

4.       Or submit my information and have an agent call me.

As I chose to speak with an agent, it turns out that the person had been an agent for lyearrs and was very easy to speak with.  She wasn’t pushy at all and so helpful with what I wanted.  She compared my old policy and gave me links to look at some different plan comparisons, going way beyond my expectations!  I was very pleased.

Also, the agent informed me that I really didn’t need to do price shopping until I turned 40 if I was happy with what I had.  At age 40, women have what they call rate increases: for your age, for your bracket and at age forty, you also have to get a physical and pretty much reapply for insurance all over again, so it’s possibly a 3 way rate up.  WOW!  I never knew that and will definitely keep that in mind when I become 40 years old.

I highly recommend this company, as I was told there are no differences in what you pay on policies, and with this one you can compare and look at different prices and plans!  Very nice.

I got the same thing when I turned 50 this year. They increased my rate for my new age band (50-54), and then raised the rate of the age band! That was 2 rate increases withing a very short time which seems very unfair.

It’s rough out there for those of us who must buy our own health insurance, and you are right – a good agent can be a lot of help!
