I found out a few weeks ago that my auto insurance, covered by GMAC and supported by a broker, Brooke insurance, is expiring, and not being renewed.  The broker, has filed bankruptcy.  This leaves me in a conundrum, as my broker can’t even help me and has made NO attempt whatsoever to get in touch with me to let me know what’s going on.

So how does one go about acquire car insurance as if they’ve never had it before? 

Well, the goals I want to keep in mind were:

I want the least expensive car insurance with the best coverage possible, for the type of car I own.

Being the ever thrifty person, I own a very economical car.  Partially because I know cheap cars means cheap car insurance. I researched and found that the larger or the more expensive the vehicle, the more the auto insurance costs.  The less it costs for repairing the vehicle are also taken into consideration when getting auto insurance coverage.

Now, how do I pick a provider?  Do I want to work with a brokerage?  Do I just want a captive (and local) agent?  In thinking about it, I think I’d rather work with a brokerage so I have choices…OR…

I could feasibly go ONLINE and get quotes and choices there.  So many different websites and choices…I feel vulnerable and a bit lost…what do I do?  Well, I’ve asked around and looked at different ratings of online quoting companies, and decided I would go to InsureMe’s website and fill out some information there, of which I get matched with different agents, some being captive, some being brokers, but this gave me a wide variety of choices to help make the right decision.

Insureme gives you the choice to choose what kind of coverage you want for liability, or if you want comprehensive (full) or medical, rental, etc.  Also, they provide you with a questionnaire for any questions you might want to ask any agent you speak with.  Very helpful if you don’t know what you should be asking for.

I was pretty happy with the results and basically, I went to one site to get everything I needed.  Better than trying to find agents in a directory (they’ve already done that for you) and they give you the choices in one area.
