Quick and dirty way to find keyword trends when purchasing a domain name.

February 11, 2009 | Author: April | Posted in Keywords

I recently ventured into the world of domain name searching.  This was a little daunting because you will be carrying that name with you, and it is a business decision for something you want to promote in the most positive and consumer attracting way possible.  Ok, in trying to find out a good URL/Domain name to purchase, I first chose some general keywords that fit with what I wanted to do (that went along with my niche), like bargain, genx, etc.  Then I wanted to look up search trends for those general keywords, so I did some research and found some good websites:

(you will want to look up your niche first to see if ANYONE is searching for what you want to sell)

This is a really interesting site, forecasting keyword searches and trends, gender and age through MSN:

So although there are a few restrictions, this is very interesting!  I actually looked up the keyword “beauty” and found that at least through MSN, most consumers typing that word in were men above the age of 50!  That helps me to better understand my audience (again, at least in MSN) and how to market verbally to them.

I can then break down the keyword search further, and can go to Wordtracker and take the free trial…it’s a good one for searching, especially with Google search results.  That way I’ll be able to use the specific keywords to utilize for any type of marketing purposes (email, organic or paid search, etc) to build out the content and what verbiage you use on your site.

After that, I started my search for domain names, which is another whole bag of worms, to be talked about in another article!

This is the one-two punch for those that need to get stuff done NOW!

Thanks for this article, April. It is good information for people who are looking for a domain name. People can argue for hours about the best way to pick a domain name, and believe me, if you hang out on webmaster forums – they do!

You mentioned wordtracker, and I do like this very quick tool – http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com

It lets you use phrases, and gives you a very general idea of traffic. Since the source is less popular than Google (for instance) the numbers will be smaller. But you can still compare on phrase’s popularity compared to another phrase.
