Choosing a wordpress application for your website…easier to do than you think!
I wanted to share my experience with adding a wordpress theme to my work in progress site: www.cheapbargainstoday.com After perusing wordpress themes, I finally chose the WP-PortalTheme, which to me seems to be one of the most professional and flexible websites out of the hundreds that I looked at.
The VERY good thing about using a wordpress theme from the official wordpress website (wordpress.org) is that they are very safe and have been checked by wordpress for viruses and any problems. This is wonderful, especially for a newbie like me. Nothing to worry about.
Basically, once you find the theme you want, you download the theme, unpack it (zipped), and then you need an ftp program to upload it. If you aren’t familiar with FTP and uploading something into the server your site is hosted on, that will have to be another article or your own personal homework, but make sure to upload it to the themes directory…. then you go to “appearance” and long story short..turn it on.
Once you get your wordpress theme uploaded via (FTP) onto your server, it’s a good idea to feel your way around your admin. So you do have some initial choices to make when creating the site initially, but then it’s good to go back and make sure you got everything up right…
When you login, you will see your dashboard. The left hand side helps you navigate through. The sections are divided up by
- posts and what you can do with them
- Media, links pages and comments
- Appearance, with your options to edit or change
- Plugins: what you have installed and what you can add or edit.
- Users
- Tools
- Settings
The middle section provides your posts at a glance, recent comments, links, and plugins.
The right hand section provides a place to do a quick post, what might be sitting in saved Drafts, and wordpress news, as well as categories. Categories definitely help you keep your posts in order, I definitely would choose that.
Now, there is a new version of wordpress out, should I download? I’m always scared of doing that…I feel like the newer the upgrade, the more opportunity they have of controlling you…but that’s not specific to wordpress.
I LOVE wordpress! Also, you will want to peruse the plugins, widgets and decide what you might want. But again, that’s another article to come!…

I heart WordPress too.
And yes, I always try to keep up with the latest WordPress updates – for one thing they close security loopholes as they are found. The automatic updates of WP versions and plugins is a fairly new feature, and a wonderful time saver. I have never had any problems with it.
And I can tell you from experience, it is not fun having months of work ruined by a hacker. Securing WordPress websites after an installation could be the subject of another article. hmmm…..
