How to find a cheap airline flight
If you are a road warrior and like to be in the air traveling, or if you are a frequent business traveler, you end up learning (sometimes the hard way) about better and/or less expensive ways to travel. This article will help you to find a good airline flight.
First, go to www.kayak.com , which is by far one of the best travel search engines around. That is absolultely the best place to check first. When checking, know these things:
Kayak doesn’t include Southwest or (frontier?) airlines. Those you will have to check yourself.
*good to know: Southwest and Frontier are pretty much the cheapest airlines out there, so it is good to check on their prices.
*good to know: you can choose to look at multiple dates and prices in the month to see when the cheapest flight is. Traveling during the week is less expensive than the weekend or Monday or Friday.
*good to know: find out where airline hubs are, and match your flight to the airport it’s best supported. So for example, do a United flight to LaGuardia, NY, or JFK, NY to see if any flights are better time or cost.
*good to know: odd times on flights may make them less expensive, but this usually includes a stopover somewhere, so you have to decide if you want to spend that kind of time in an airport, or if it’s worth it to do direct flight.
* good to know: almost all (except for southwest) airlines charge for checking bags, and now, there really isn’t any room in the planes for luggage. So, plan to include at least $15 per checked bag. (Try to travel light and layer consciously).
*good to know: it’s a great idea to search at least a month or two prior to traveling. If you wait, and it gets close to the time you will pay more and have less flight availability.
If Kayak doesn’t work for you, you can also try orbitz, priceline and/or cheaptickets.com. Honestly, I really haven’t found a better price off of these, but sometimes you can get lucky. I’ve had other people who have had good experience with these sites, but after comparing all of them, I find Kayak to be the absolute best.
