Cultivate your own Stevia
When you want to grow stevia at home you have to pay attention to some issues to make your plan successful and to have a happy harvest.
As you maybe know the stevia plant originally comes from South America, and so she is accustomed to a warm climate zone. When you live in Europe or Northern America it will be a bit more work for you to grow the plants and keep them alive, because the plant cannot survive the frosty winter when growing outdoors. The solution is either to pot the plants in during the winter and keeping them in your house, or to grow them in a greenhouse when you want to produce a larger crop.
Maybe you ask yourself why not to keep the plant indoors permanently, well you can but it grows much better when growing outdoors on a larger ground and not in pots. It’s also easier to raise the population of your plants as you easily can produce layers. You just have to pull a sturdier shoot from a plant to the ground and cover it with earth. After some time a new crop will arise and you can cut it from the “mother”.
When you still want to grow your sweet leaf indoors, you should choose pots which are at least 7 to 8 inches high to let enough space for the roots to develop. The same is essential when you overwinter your outdoor crops.
When you water the plants you really have to care that you don’t flood them. Just keep the soil wet. If you have little, not fully grown plants it’s best to use a small water sprayer for the right “dosage”. When the plants are growing outdoor you don’t really have to care, because the water will trickle away anyway.
Follow these tips and you will soon have your own sweetener.
