What is Elder Care?

Elder care refers to any special resources for elderly people in frail health. This population is, actually, only estimated at about 5% of the over 65 population. But their needs can be very intense, and caregivers do not always know where to find it.

Frailty is defined as chronic functional impairment in one or more of 6 activities of daily living (ADL’s) requiring the help of another person. These ADL’s include:

  • Bathing
  • Dressing
  • Grooming
  • Transferring
  • Eating
  • Toileting

What Kind of Elder Care Is Available?

Here are some examples of elder care resources that are available to help caregivers.

  • Meals (in-home or in congregate settings)
  • Socialization
  • Personal care
  • Light housekeeping in the home
  • Residential facilities (retirement homes, Board and Care facilities, and nursing facilities)
  • Adult day care
  • Transportation
  • Telephone reassurance
  • Friendly visiting
  • Caregiver support
  • Respite care
  • Emergency response systems such as Lifeline
  • You may find some community based programs. Other programs are provided by private companies, and of course, may come with a high price tag. If you need help caring for a senior that you love, you can find help from the government.
