A Popular Gift For Kids: Cybertronian Optimus Prime
The most up-to-date installment from the Transformers saga hit retail store shelves on June 22, 2010 – as a video video game, that is. Activision’s take on the Transformers story line centers on what may be regarded as a pre-quel of sorts, or an origin tale of how the chief with the Autobots rose to his revered position.
Prime Before His Time
Supporters of the Transformer’s cartoon series from the nineteen-eighties, and by extension Hollywood’s most current version from the tale, will instantly identify the difference in the new/young Cybertronian Optimus Prime. For starters the video game’s story is set on the transformer’s home planet, Cybertron, ravaged by the battle between Decepticons and Autobots.
Instead of the conventional big-rig Optimus Prime, Activision chose to give the leader from the Autobots a different alternative form than fans are accustomed to seeing. The “younger” prime takes the form of an armored vehicle mounted with cannon prepared to blast.
Origin Of A Hero
The plot of War for Cybertron takes place well ahead of the Autobots come into contact with people and in a sense fills in plot holes found in the 1980s cartoon series that commenced the Transformers saga. Optimus Prime’s assignment in the video game is to rally the Autobots to help save planet Cybertron from Megatron and also the Decepticons because the head of the Autobots, Zeta Prime, is revealed to have fallen in battle.
The Cybertronian Optimus Prime becomes, in some way, pushed into a situation of leadership to test his mettle. Rather than the self-assured, strong leader observed from the television show and big-dollar silver screen creation, Activision’s portrayal of Optimus Prime centers on the heavy burden and sacrifice of management. You could say that Optimus Prime, like a younger, unsophisticated general, is promoted before he is ready.
Prime On New Platforms
The primary core of Transformer enthusiasts, at the end of the day, most likely will continue to be loyal to the franchise and buy into the video game’s premise. Activision, to see to it that followers do, has licensed the War for Cybertron on all video game platforms like Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Nintendo’s Wii and DS.
So far both the video game and action figures have gotten good ratings from consumers, but in all fairness, several Transformer hardcores point out the game play in the game itself simply leaves something to be desired. By and large, Activision’s most recent take on Optimus Prime works nicely.
