Health Insurance For 20 to 30 Year Olds

Health Insurance in your 20s and 30s

In young adulthood (ages 20-39), health issues now tend to reflect a women’s marital and career issues. At this stage in a women’s life, they are most susceptible to immune system disorders such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis; and they also may be at risk for diabetes and other chronic conditions. Additional health concerns for women may include weight gain, ovarian cancer, skin cancer, and breast cancer.

Young adulthood may be the time to make sure your chosen lifestyle did not lead to any illnesses or disease. When a woman is in her 20s, she should try to avoid skin-damaging habits such as smoking, drinking, and a lot of sun exposure. Always make sure to use sunscreen, even in the winter. Women in their 20s are also more fertile and more likely to give birth.

As women move into their 30s, estrogen and progesterone levels fall and they become less and less fertile, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get pregnant. Since metabolism begins to slow down as well in your 30s, you should make sure to have an exercise routine to keep from gaining weight. A significant health concern for women in their 30s is the development of osteoporosis. Women’s bones begin to lose calcium, and 1 in 4 women will develop osteoporosis in her lifetime. Making sure you are taking at least 1500 mg. of calcium a day can help you to avoid this.

Some tests women in their 20s and 30s should take may include:

  • Yearly breast exams

  • Pelvic exams

  • Mammogram (usually between the ages of 30 and 35)

  • Pap smear

  • Breast self-exam

  • Annual physical

  • Blood pressure

  • Cholesterol

Since many tests are recommended to keep you healthy into your mature and post menopause years, it is best both for your health and financial status to have health insurance. A study has shown that health insurance rates are lowest among 23 and 24 year olds and increase in the 31 and 32 year old group. It is also proven that women tend to pay more for health insurance, especially in their 30s. Women tend to use medical facilities and resources more often than men. This causes insurance companies to increase premiums for women at a rate as much as 49% more. Staying healthy, exercising, eating right, and taking the necessary precautions to a healthy future can help to lower insurance rates.
