What Causes Hives?

My family has had a a couple of memorable attacks of hives, and they always seem to happen at the wrong time. During my wedding, my mother broke out in a terrible rash. Except for eating some different food than she was used to, and of course being excited and happy, my mom could not imagine what she did to bring on this uncomfortable outbreak.

My son endured his one and only outbreak when were on a family vacation. Now he had run around outside, and it is possible he had contact with some plants that caused the eruption. But, even after we visited the doctor, we could not figure out what brought it on. The doctor prescribed an anti-hystamine which did not seem to help at all. The outbreak was awful, with red and itchy bumps everywhere on his body, even the palms of his hands and on his ears!

So what causes hives? They are thought to be a hystamine related reaction (allergy), and many people associate them with an excited mental state. In both cases in our family, the people who had a hives attack were excited, but in a happy way. They were happy, that is, until hives ruined their fun.

Doctors tend to prescribe allergy medication, but my family members never enjoyed much relief. Topical ointments to help with the itching did more. Beyond that, allergy medications tended to make them sleepy or dizzy, and they felt like the cure was almost worse than the disease!
