Fasting: is it good?

February 2, 2009 | Author: April | Posted in Health

There are so many different opinions going around on whether it’s good to fast or not.  Really, my opinion is “go with your gut”.  I personally have never really felt not eating is good, but every once in a while, I feel really toxic and greasy and just downright gross inside, where my tummy hurts constantly from the bad junky food I have managed to pass through my mouth. (But it tastes so good!).

I have listened and read many different books and articles on cleansing.  I’ve even worked at a holistic health store for many years, studying the human body and health.  I’ve also tried various cleanses, and honestly, the one that worked best for me was the MASTER CLEANSE.  It’s a really easy cleanse that somehow doesn’t drive you crazy from hunger or thirst. You would never ever think that 5-10 days on a lemonade diet would actually be OK.  Now, I’m not ever suggesting you do any cleanse or fast without consulting your doctor first.  This has just been my experience.  The basics of the cleanse are:

Fresh squeezed lemons in purified water, add cayenne  and unrefined pure maple syrup to taste.  Basically, that’s it and you do it for as long as you desire.  I’ve never gone beyond 5 days, but I’ve had cohorts that have done it for the full 9 and they claim they never felt better!  (they may be lying, and think about how they felt in retrospect when they aren’t hungry any more).

Here are some suggestions if  you plan to do a cleanse, or the master cleanse:

1.        Make sure you have a light week, and if possible, work from home.

2.       Exercise to get the blood going, and toxins moved out of your system, but not a heavy duty workout

3.       If you can, rest and meditate for peace and comfort.  This is almost a spiritual process in some ways.

4.       I tried using the salt water cleanse and laxatives as they were really harsh on my stomach, not all results are the same.  I ended up being…ahem constipated because of it, which is bad for a cleanse and detox.

5.       When you do go back onto solid food, don’t do like I did.  I ate a cheeseburger right away.  (I know, not good right after a week long liquid diet…and it wrecked my stomach, so I suggest some brown rice and mild introductions of soup and work your way into proteins!
