Finding a good hair stylist
Oh, the woes of women trying to find the right person that can cut and style their hair just the way we want. Women’s hair is one of the most important “beauty” facets there are. We coiff like crazy, trying like hell to find the perfect balance between what we will put up with in hair prep or lazy days and what looks best on us.
I’ve been to so many different hair stylists, had several “color disasters”, and a few perm disasters. I lived through the 80′s big hair and after all that work, I stayed in a ponytail for probably about 20 years because i was fed up with all the girly prep and curling, coloring, perming, etc.
Not ONCE in my life did I find a hairstylist that I stuck with. I’m not sure why, but it seems the biggest thing I ran into was that they had an idea of how I should look and didn’t really listen to what I said. Most of the time I left with my hair cut and styled to frame my face and I’d walk out with the preverbial face framing “hair bowl”. Now this might work for some, but on me, it was matronly and did nothing to make me look better. It looked like I was trying to bring the 80′s back!
Well, maybe not all women’s hair is somewhat tied to their confidence, but it feels good to have a cut and style that makes you look your best. You will not believe where I found my true love hair stylist!
ready???? Supercuts. This woman is FANTASTIC with scissors, style and waxing. Never before have i had such lush wonderful treatment, and not once have i felt confident and comfortable enough to securely and safely make appointments and wait for her. Her appearance would make one think she would be good at maybe long hair and bangs, but looks are deceiving.
I walked in, showed her a picture and she cut it just like she was supposed to. Now, this cut cost something like $18 bucks. I tipped her $10 because with haircuts coming up to $120 each, my price was a steal.
Lesson; talent comes in unexpected packages. If you haven’t found your stylist, and with the economy, it might be good to take a chance and try Supercuts!
On the color side, I’ve been coloring my hair since I was 14. I didn’t know if I was any good at it or not, but learned quickly that color stylists again have their own idea on what should work. After years of asking different people who cut my hair about color, I learned this: I can do pretty much all of it on my own. On the few times I paid for color, a few were to darken my completely bleached out hair. I felt I wasn’t knowledgeable enough to do it on my own. Turns out, those people turned my hair a musty GREYBROWN color. I paid over $100 each time for ugly hair. I gave up.
Here’s what I learned about darkening hair: do gradual darker dyes, you can purchase on your own. Eventually you will match it to your roots. Then use only semipermanent color every few months. Alas! You will have your color back! (only if you are confident and have done a hair test would you even possibly do this-)
I will continue to go to Supercuts to my (SHHH, i’m not sharing!) shining star until she’s no longer there….
